Polymer Films in Sensitive Pressure Sensors
Sophie Miller (Chemical Engineering, ’15) shares her research process, inspiration, and advice for hopeful undergraduate researchers. After a summer of research at the California Institute of Technology, Sophie used her UAR Major Grant to bring an innovative method of making pressure sensors to the Bao Research Group at Stanford, which focuses on the synthesis of organic materials in electronic devices. Sophie’s independent research makes the sensors in electronic skin – used in robotics and skin prosthetics – both more sensitive and easier to produce. She successfully constructed porous polymer films that can be used as molds to build the compressible part of the sensor. Sophie’s work was the basis for her honors thesis in Chemical Engineering. She is grateful for her UAR and chemical engineering department advisors, especially Dr. Zhenan Bao, for their expert support and willingness to let her independently explore her interests.
